[toggle title=”What exactly is your specialized crochet-hook method?”] Our crochet-hook method is an all-natural dreading technique that starts by using the pull & twist method to form a conical base, then using a tiny crochet hook to gently and meticulously rake the hair into the core of the base to create a complete, solid dread. It can be used with all hair types, and is the most effective natural technique for dreading asian, latino, and caucasian hair textures. There are no products or chemicals used in this method.
Be aware that just like using any instrument or tool, the skill of the person wielding the crochet hook — in this case, the loctician — determines the result. Not all locticians are created equal. We have had many clients who started their dreads by crochet elsewhere, only to find the dreads were barely locked, involved hair wrapping, or were interlocked with just a bit of crochet holding them together. Unless the result is a complete, solid dread, it is not the true crochet-hook method of dreading. With our specialized crochet-hook method, you do not have to “wait” months for your dreads to take shape. Your dreads will be completely formed by the end of your appointment.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”How long will my hair take to dread?”]The average amount of time to dread an entire head of chin-length hair is between 6-8 hours. For shoulder-length hair, plan on 10-12 hours. It may take more or less time depending on your hair texture, length, condition, density, desired amount & thickness of dreads, and whether you choose loose or rounded tips.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”How long will my dreads last, and will I need professional maintenance?”]With proper care & maintenance of your dreads, your dreads will last as long as you want them. You will be shown the basics of how to maintain your own dreads during your appointment. Most clients choose to come back for professional maintenance when their roots have grown out, around 6 weeks-3 months, especially in the first year. Your length of time between visits will depend on how fast your hair grows and how quickly your dreads mature.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”How do I book an appointment?”] Go to our contact page and follow the instructions. Appointments are available Sunday-Friday. Our current hours are 9:30am-4:30pm Sunday-Friday. Once we have confirmed your appointment, we will send you a Paypal invoice for your 2-hr deposit (plus Paypal surcharge) to hold your date & time. All your booking information will be on the invoice. The deposit will be applied towards your first two hours. [/toggle]
[toggle title=” I don’t have a Paypal account. How do I make the deposit payment?”] You do not need a Paypal account to use Paypal. Simply follow the instructions on the invoice we send. You can make a direct payment via credit or debit card. [/toggle]
[toggle title=”What if I need to reschedule my appointment?”]: Because we are normally booked at least 2-3 weeks in advance, we require a minimum 2-weeks’ notice of any rescheduling or cancellations (by email, text, or phone) or you will forfeit your deposit. [/toggle]
[toggle title=”How do I pay for the remainder of my balance?”]After your appointment, you can pay your final balance with cash, debit, or credit card. If using credit or debit, a processing fee will apply.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”What can I expect after getting dreadlocks? Will my scalp hurt?”]Some people who get new dreadlocks experience a pulling or tightening sensation in their scalp area. Any discomfort should subside within 24 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as aspirin, may offer relief to those with sensitive scalps.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”I want a bunch of thin dreads, and want the tips left loose. Can you do that?”]You can choose to have your dreads as thin or as thick as you’d like, or a mixture of thick & thin. Your dreads can be left loose at the ends or rounded at the tip. Keep in mind that it may take a little more time to complete a greater amount of thin dreads than a smaller quantity of thick dreads.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”I want to get dreads, but my hair is really short. Do I need to let it grow?”] You can start with as little as three inches, but keep in mind that your finished dreads may be a bit shorter than your starting hair length. We recommend a minimum of 5 inches of hair to start.[/toggle]
[toggle title=” How much do you charge for maintenance? I already have dreads but I need to fix loose strands and clean up the roots.”]See our services page for maintenance rates. Most maintenance requires a minimum of 2.5-3.5 hours; the total amount of time will depend on how much work you need.[/toggle]
[toggle title=” If I ever want to take out my dreads without cutting them, can I?”] Yes,we are able to undo dreads, but keep in mind that it takes a good amount of time to undread locked hair (from 15 minutes to an hour to undo each dread, depending on how locked-up and mature the dreads are).[/toggle]
[toggle title=”I’m interested in extensions. Where can I buy the hair, and what is your process?”] Our clients have purchased real hair in wefts (sections of hair sewn together at the top) at local places such as The Wig & Hair Shop, WOW beauty supplies, and loose hair direct from the original hair owners at hairsellon.com.
If you would like to attach extensions to your dreads, you have the option of having the extensions dreaded and installed during your appointment, or if time allows, having the extensions pre-made and ready to attach by one of our skilled dreadlock artists.
We do not currently sell dreaded or undreaded hair extensions at this time. You must first purchase the hair, then bring it to us during or, in the case of pre-made extensions, before your appointment. An in-person consultation is recommended for clients interested in installing dreadlock extensions.
When choosing the right hair for your extensions, we encourage you to select hair that is similar in color and texture to your own. There is no need to purchase the highest-quality hair, as the drier or less-silky the hair, the easier it will be to dread. Real hair is recommended, as it will last longer than synthetic hair. We use the same method to dread extensions as we do to dread all hair.[/toggle]
[toggle title=”Are you able to fix my hair? I tried getting it dreaded somewhere else and the results are disappointing.”] Yes, many clients have come to us to fix their first attempts at dreading. We have seen clients come in with wax in their hair, loops, rubber bands and string holding their “dreads” together, interlocking disasters, and “barely there” dreads – i.e. unraveling strands of hair with knots. We have successfully fixed these problems, leaving clients with healthy, natural dreads.[/toggle]
